Charlie McNabb is a queer nonbinary person living in Olympia, Washington. They came out as bisexual, then as queer, then as lesbian in a tumultuous few years in high school and college. Then they came out as nonbinary at age 30. Their adolescence was rough for the usual reasons, but also because sex ed and popular culture didn’t reflect their sexual and gender identities.
Charlie has a Bachelor of Arts with a focus on cultural anthropology, a Master of Arts in Folklore, and a Master of Library and Information Science. They have been doing ethnographic research since 1999 and working in libraries and archives since 2008. Their first book, Nonbinary Gender Identities, was published in 2018.
In their spare time, Charlie likes to make zines, go bird watching and geocaching, and search for Bigfoot. They also enjoy spending time with their wife Erin and their four cats.
Charlie wrote this book in the hopes that it will help parents and teachers better support the LGBTQIA+ youth in their lives through their adolescent years, and for LGBTQIA+ people to understand how things were and wish for a more hopeful future.
